Launched in 2015, the Elsevier Highly Cited Chinese Researchers list has been released for 12 consecutive years as of 2026. The list uses Scopus, a globally authoritative citation and index database, as the statistical source for analyzing the research performance of Chinese scholars. It has garnered significant attention from numerous media outlets and academics both in China and abroad.

The 2025 edition recognized a total of 6,310 scholars from 543 universities, enterprises and research institutions. It covered 83 first-level disciplines across the 10 broad academic fields defined by China's Ministry of Education. The underlying data extraction employed a further optimized and updated version of Elsevier's mapping system for the Ministry of Education's first-level discipline classification, which now covers 111 disciplines. This enhancement allows for a more intuitive and systematic presentation of data related to Chinese scholars' disciplinary affiliations and performance, bringing into focus scholars who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in more specialized sub-disciplines with distinct regional characteristics in China.
