Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management (Tsinghua SEM) hosted the inaugural Academy of Management Journal (AMJ) Paper Development Workshop on October 15, 2024. It marks a significant advancement for academic collaboration in China, providing scholars with a platform to receive critical feedback from leading journal editors. The workshop features a large number of attendance, submissions, and accepted proposals and reinforces Tsinghua SEM's emerging reputation as a center for cutting-edge management research.
The workshop attracted a diverse group of researchers seeking to refine their work with insights from 13 AMJ editors in attendance. They are Editor-in-Chief Marc Gruber, Deputy Editors Georg von Krogh and Quinetta Roberson, and 10 Associate Editors: Anne ter Wal, Bill Wan, Davide Ravasi, Floor Rink, Juliane Reinecke, Zhu Jing, Wang Mo, Ned Wellman, Sekou Bermiss, and Tal Simons. The participation comprised nearly half of the entire editorial team, underscoring the significance of the event. The workshop also received more than 100 paper submissions, with many accepted.
The day began with a welcome address from Flextronics Chair Professor Li Ning of the Department of Leadership and Organization Management at Tsinghua SEM, who co-organized the event with Marc Gruber and Zhu Jing from Nanyang Technological University. Li emphasized the significance of such workshops in fostering global academic collaboration and providing early-career researchers with direct access to leading experts. Marc Gruber introduced AMJ, outlining the journal's mission, the intricacies of the paper submission and review process. In the Q&A session, attendees interacted with the editors and asked questions about submission guidelines, publication standards, and the broader academic publishing landscape.
The major part of the workshop was to provide attendees with personalized, hands-on feedback on their submitted research proposals. Participants broke into smaller groups for focused discussions with individual editors. Each editor facilitated a roundtable session where attendees presented their research and received tailored feedback on their specific proposals. Those not participating in a specific roundtable were encouraged to observe other sessions to benefit from the feedback given to their peers.
The personalized feedback sessions offered participants an opportunity to refine their research under the direct mentorship of leading scholars in the field. Feedback focused on improving the clarity, rigor, and impact of the submitted papers, with editors providing actionable suggestions to advance each idea toward publication. These sessions enabled researchers to build connections with both AMJ editors and their peers.
The day concluded with a plenary meeting summarizing key takeaways from the feedback sessions. Marc Gruber and other editors delivered closing remarks, emphasizing the value of perseverance in academic publishing and the importance of workshops like this. The event wrapped up with a farewell gathering, where attendees networked and reflected on the day's discussions.
