China-Roots Program Introduces China Business Environment and Industry Practices

China-Roots Program is a series of lectures and events specially designed for international students to gain understanding of China’s business environment and status quo of industries. The program is organized by the MBA Programs of Tsinghua SEM with strong support from prestigious professors, entrepreneurs and senior corporate executives. They come to share their knowledge in a certain field and rich experience from their work in China or related to China.

Lectures

In 2012 six lectures were offered to students from Tsinghua-MIT International MBA Program and exchange students in SEM.

The first lecture was on Venture Capital, Entrepreneurship and China's Capital Markets, taught by Prof. JIA Ning from the accounting department of SEM.

The second lecture was on Leading and Managing in China, taught by Mr. Frank T. Gallo, founder and president of Calypso Consulting, a firm dedicated to improving the level of talent in China. At the lecture, Mr. Gallo discussed different cultural foundations of Chinese versus Western leaders and how those influence their leadership styles. He also presented findings from the research on unique leadership traits of Chinese leaders and drew from real examples in China of how leaders have addressed these cultural differences to make leadership work in China.

Lectures

The third lecture deals with Guanxi Building and Management in China, taught by Prof. Luo Jar-Der, Professor of Sociology, whose main research interests include organization research, social network analysis, and economic sociology.

 The forth lecture was concerned with Media Landscape in Mainland China and Hong Kong, taught by Leung Ka-Wing & Tammy Tam. Mr. Leung is a well-known news anchor, host, and senior news executive based in Hong Kong. He is a former senior vice president of news & public affairs, and director of wireless TV News & public affairs in Asian Television. As a senior journalist in Hong Kong, Ms. Tam is a former vice president in Department of News and Public Affairs and chief reporter of wireless TV news, and also a Senior Manager of cable TV in Asian Television.

The fifth lecture introduces the consulting industry in China, taught by Sean Wang, associate director at Performance Improvement, Advisory Service, Ernst & Young.

The sixth lecture covers the healthcare industry in China, taught by Michael Cheah, former President of Xi’an Janssen Pharmaceutical, under Johnson & Johnson Group.
