Background

Nowadays, women play important roles in society and they are under pressure from both career and family. How to balance the family life and the career is a more realistic topic for every woman. So we invited several successful women to share their experience with our students and discuss how to create a happy life.

Speaker's Background

Marjorie Yang is Chairman of Esquel Group,aleading textile and apparel manufacturer with operationsthroughout the world.

Ms. Yang earned a Bachelor of Science degree in pure mathematics from MIT and an MBA from Harvard Business School.In 1978, Ms. Yang returned to Hong Kong andbecamea founding member of Esquel.Shewas appointedChairman of the Group in 1995.

Under Ms. Yang’s leadership, Esquel has grown to become vertically integrated, with operations spanning cotton farming, yarn spinning, fabric, apparel and accessories production, research and development as well as design and merchandising services.Esquel’s 47,000 employees across the world produce 76 million shirts every year for leading brands like Brooks Brothers, Calvin Klein, Hugo Boss, Next, Nike, Polo Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger, providing them a one-stop cotton shirt solution.

Ms. Yang is currentlya Non-official Member of the Executive Council andJustice of the Peaceof the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; andMember ofthe NationalCommittee oftheChinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.

Ms. Yang has been Chairman of the Textile & Clothing Sector Committee of the China Association of Enterprises with Foreign Investment (CAEFI) since 2003, and Vice Chairman of CAEFI since 2004.She isalso the Chairman of the Hong Kong/United States Business Council, Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Member of the Greater Pearl River Delta Business Council.Ms. Yangis dedicated to strengthening co-operation among foreign-invested textile firms and enhancing their communication with the Chinese Government.

Ms. Yanghas animmenseinterest inconservingChina’s environment and cultureas well as thepromotion of education,with a particular interest in thedevelopmentof young managers.She has been very involved with the MBA programs at Harvard, MIT, Tsinghua, Fudan and Lingnanuniversities.She is currently a member of the various advisory boards of Harvard Business School, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Tsinghua University andan honorary member of the Court of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Apart from public and community service, Ms. Yang is also on the boards of Novartis International AG, Swire Pacific Limited and The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited as Independent Non-executive Director.
