Physicist and Chief Scientist of Mozi PAN Jian-Wei Delivers Commencement Address at Tsinghua SEM Commencement 2018

On July 8, 2018, Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management (Tsinghua SEM) held its Commencement 2018 at Gymnasium of Tsinghua University.

Tsinghua SEM Dean QIAN Yingyi reported that, during the academic year of 2017-2018, a total of 252 students in the undergraduate programs were awarded bachelor degrees, 495 earned second-degrees of undergraduate programs, and 1,035 were awarded graduate degrees. In total, 1,782 students received their degrees from Tsinghua SEM.

Student representatives of eight programs shared their academic and personal experiences at Tsinghua SEM, and showed how joining Tsinghua SEM changed their lives. They were ZHOU Xiang (Undergraduate Program), LI Yimeng (Second-Degree Undergraduate Program), RAN Yuanjin (Master’s Program), ZHU Xu (MBA Program), NI Ankang (Tsinghua-MIT Global MBA Program), LIANG Kai (EMBA Program), Giorgio Fortunato (Tsinghua-INSEAD dual-degree EMBA Program), and ZHANG Jiamin (Ph.D. Program).

Professor PAN Jian-Wei, Physicist, Chief Scientist of Mozi, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Director of the CAS Center for Excellence in Quantum Information and Quantum Physics and Executive Vice-President of University of Science and Technology of China, delivered his commencement address. He discussed on the theme of the value of science, both for individuals and for the society. He shared with the graduates his personal experiences as a scientist as well as his philosophic thinking on the topic.

Editor’s Notes

Professor PAN Jian-Wei obtained his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in theoretical physics from University of Science and Technology of China in 1992 and 1995 respectively, and his Ph.D. degree in experimental physics from the University of Vienna in 1999. Professor PAN’s research areas include quantum optics, quantum information and quantum foundations. As one of the pioneers in experimental quantum information science, Professor PAN has made a series of breakthrough discoveries. For his ground-breaking contributions in the field of quantum communication, Professor PAN was awarded the 2017 Future Science Prize in Physical Science and was named one of the 2017 Nature’s 10--ten people who mattered this year-- by the journal Nature.
