7th Advisory Board Meeting Held

The Seventh Advisory Board Meeting of Tsinghua SEM was held on October 31, 2006 in Beijing, after which, Honorary Chairman Zhu Rongji and State Councilor Chen Zhili met with all the attending board members at the Great Hall of People.

Gu Binglin, President of Tsinghua University and Vice Chair of the Advisory Board hosted the board meeting as the chair person. Zhang Xinsheng, Vice-Minister of Education, was invited for a speech. The 21 other attending board members, who are worldly prestigious entrepreneurs and scholars, included: Craig R. Barrett, Chairman of Intel Corporation, Houghton Freeman, Chairman of Freeman Foundation, Christopher B. Galvin, Chairman and Co-founder of Harrison Street Capital, Maurice R. Greenberg, Chairman and CEO of C. V. STARR & Co., Inc., Robert Greifeld, President and CEO of NASDAQ Stock Market, Nobuyuki Idei, Chief Corporate Advisor and Chairman of the Advisory Board of Sony Corporation, Dr. Irwin M. Jacobs, Chairman of Qualcomm Incorporated, Edward C. Johnson 3d, Chairman and CEO of Fidelity Investments, Gerard J. Kleisterlee, President & CEO of Royal Philips Electronics, Li Rongrong, Director of State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council, Liu Mingkang, Chairman of China Banking Regulatory Commission, Donald John Roberts, Senior Associate Dean of Graduate School of Business of Stanford University, Alan White, Executive Associate Dean of MIT Sloan School of Management, H. Lee Scott, Jr, President & CEO of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., Dr. Keiji Tachikawa, President of Japan Aerospace Exploration and Member of Board and Corporate Adviser of NTT DoCoMo, Inc., John L. Thornton, Professor and Director of the Global Leadership Program of Tsinghua University and Retired President and Member of the Board of Directors of the Goldman Sachs Group, Inc., Joseph M. Tucci, Chairman, President and CEO of EMC Corporation, Wang Dazhong, Former President of Tsinghua University, Dr. Victor K. Fung, Chairman of Li & Fung Group of Companies, Marjorie Yang, Chairman and CEO of Esquel Group, Zhao Chunjun, Former Dean of Tsinghua SEM.

At the board meeting, Qian Yingyi, Dean of Tsinghua SEM reported to the board members on the School’s progress in education, research and program development in the past one year. Members held a heated discussion on the topics of “capturing the unique Chinese experiences” and “students and faculty development”.

4 other board members: Ma Kai, Minister of the National Development and Reform Commission, Zhou Xiaochuan, Governor of the People’s Bank of China, Wang Qishan, Mayor of Beijing Municipal Government, and Guo Shuqing, Chairman of China Construction Bank Corporation attended the meeting with Zhu Rongji and Chen Zhili and the banquet followed. Zhou Ji, Minister of Education, Chen Xi, Chairman of Tsinghua Council, He Jiankun, Executive Vice President of Tsinghua University, and Vice President Xie Weihe were also present at the meeting and the banquet.

The Advisory Board of Tsinghua SEM was established in October 2000. Currently, it has 42 board members, composed of board chairs, presidents and CEOs of well-known international and national enterprises, deans of MIT-Sloan and Stanford Business School and heads from government agencies. Zhu Rongji is the Honorary Chairman and attended the first and second Advisory Board meeting. Henry Paulson, the new U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, served as the first board chair from October 2000 to June 2002. Lord John Browne, Group Chief Executive of BP PLC., is the chair now.

Since the Advisory Board was established 6 years ago, the members have actively participated in the development of Tsinghua SEM, giving strategic advices, promoting faculty development and extensive international collaborations, helping the School invite world-famous scholars to be the chair and special-term professors and establish the China Center for Financial Research, the Center for China in the World Economy and the China Retail Research Center as well as funding important research projects.
