Reuters Chairman Visits Tsinghua

Niall FitzGerald, Chairman of Reuters Group visitedTsinghuaUniversityand met with Vice President of the University Xie Weihe onJune 19, 2007. The meeting was also attended by Professor Qian Yingyi, Dean of School of Economics and Management, Xia Guangzhi, Deputy-director of the Department of International Communication of the University and David Pan, Director of Alumni and Development Office of Tsinghua SEM.

During their meeting, Vice President of the University Xie Weihe briefed the visitors on the patterns of cooperation between the University and enterprises, expressing thanks for Reuters’ essential supports toSchoolofEconomicsand Management. Niall FitzGerald, Chairman of Reuters Group is the member of the Advisory Board of Tsinghua SEM. The cooperation between Reuters and Tsinghua SEM can be traced back to March, 2006, when the Financial Risk Research Lab jointly developed by the two sides was formally launched. The lab is part of Tsinghua’sChinaCenterfor Financial Research (CCFR), a research institution dedicated to find solutions for Chinese companies’ risk management. Through this cooperation between the two parties, Tsinghua SEM students will be able to get access to Reuters’ Kondor+ Risk Management System and 3000Xtra Financial Information Desktop Terminal. Additionally, Reuters also set up a scholarship project special for Tsinghua EMBA students.

Professor Qian Yingyi, Dean of Tsinghua SEM, introduced visitors from Reuters about the recent achievements the School has made and talked about the School’s internationalization in particular. The School has seen a significant increase in English-taught classes in 2007. According to Dean Qian, currently over 50% of the courses for undergraduate program are delivered in English, and all courses in Tsinghua SEM’s International MBA program are instructed in English. The two parties also discussed about further steps for the School’s internationalization and how to attract and recruit more overseas talents.

During their talks, Vice President of the University Xie Weihe suggested the two sides develop an overseas internship program in the future, which would offer Tsinghua students internship opportunities at Reuters’ overseas branch such as inLondonandNew York. The two parties exchanged gifts to each other after the meeting.
