Professor Chen Guoqing, Executive Associate Dean of Tsinghua SEM took part in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay at Luoyang city of central China's Henan Province on July 27, 2008. The 6.9-kilometer route started in early morning at a historical site dating back about 1,000 years ago. Altogether 208 torchbearers from all walks of life took part in the relay. Professor Chen Guoqing was the sixth torchbearer.

"Olympic Torch Relay is a holy and meaningful event. As an educator, I feel so delighted to experience this activity which coveys the Olympic spirit as well as the voice of peace and progress from our Chinese nation", said Professor Chen.

Luoyang, literally "north of the river Luo" was an important place of origin for Huaxia (old name for China) civilization. Starting from the Xia Dynasty, the first imperial dynasty in China, Luoyang was the capital for ancient China’s 13 dynasties during 1500 years including Shang, Western Zhou, Eastern Zhou, Eastern Han, Caowei, Western Jin, Beiwei, Sui, and Tang dynasties. Luoyang was the earliest capital city in China with the longest time of being capital in China's history.
