The last theme was “Sustainable Development Strategy”. SHI Lei, associate fellow of Tsinghua SOE; GAO Xudong, associate professor of Tsinghua SEM, deputy director of Tsinghua University Technology Innovation Center and DU Yu, general manager of BCEG Environment Development Co. Ltd. presented their opinions. SHI Lei first reviewed the history of sustainable development and the practical paradigm and strategies of sustainable development, and then discussed several problems with the guests including whether balanced development of environment protection and market competition could be achieved, and how to balance localization and globalization. GAO Xudong put forward three solutions against the backdrop of serious challenges from the perspective of sustainable development and harmony of human beings and nature: the model in the developed countries, the model based on reduced consumption, and the model based on sustainable growth. He emphasized on the importance of seeking a new sustainable development model via technological innovations, the potential of break-through innovations, proprietary innovations and national brands. DU Yu illustrated the environment protection requirements by the Twelfth Five-Year Plan at the macro level and conducted an investment analysis on the environment protection industry by introducing the status quo and trend of seven hot sectors, including the urban-township sewage treatment and polluted soil treatment sectors. He suggested that businesses should consider several factors before setting their corporate strategies including economic situation at home and abroad, differences of investment interests of state-owned and private enterprises, investment patterns and layout of large state-owned environment protection enterprises, private enterprises and conglomerate enterprises.
