Not surprisingly, upon Helen’s graduation, she was offered an opportunity to return to the insurance sector for a higher appointment. “The purpose in life is not measured by how much you earn, or how people perceived you, but really, it is your impact on the society.” Helen thought she needed to contribute to the society in bigger ways. At that point in time, an opportunity struck her when the President of Huajian Group, one of China’s largest shoe exporter, introduced Helen to the possibility of running a shoemaking factory in Ethopia. Keeping an open mind and an open heart, Helen visited Ethopia for the first time in her life. “At the end of the first day in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, I took a stroll at the lobby of the Sheraton reflecting on the sights I’ve seen around me during the day. The music resonating in the lobby brought me to the hotel bar at the back of the hotel, where I saw many foreigners singing and dancing to the music in the bar. However, there were no locals at all!” This episode reminded her of her personal childhood story where Helen and her father visited a five-star hotel in Beijing in hope to celebrate her seventh birthday, only to return home due to the expensive hotel charges. Back then, the hotel, too, was only filled with foreigners, as the locals simply could not afford the extravagant hotel charges. It was during this flashback that made Helen reflect on how the livelihoods had improved in China over the past decades. Today’s China is different due to decades of economic growth at lightning speed.
