【Abstract 】The need for corporate governance generally arises from separation of firm ownership and control that can be caused by either ownership dispersion or ownership concentration. Over the last three decades the ownership structure of the firms in China has experienced significant changes, resulting in three broad sectors – the private sector, the state sector, and the listed sector - and drawing increasing interest and attention from students of corporate governance. In this article we conduct a survey of empirical research on corporate governance in China published in peer-reviewed scholarly journals. We organize our survey on the basis of the sector of the firms under study. Within each sector, we identify the major corporate governance issues under study and the effectiveness of various internal and external governance mechanisms. After reviewing this literature, we suggest some directions for future research on corporate governance in China.
